EQUIPMENT

Q: I plan to ride just during the day, do I still need lights?

A: Front and rear lights must be mounted on the bike at all times.

Q: Will there be a bike check before the ride?

A: Yes. Required safety equipment will be inspected before the start and riders will not be allowed to start until the following requirements are met. The bike safety inspection will be conducted concurrent with registration, on June 23th, between 6:00p.m. and 9:00 p.m. or in the morning of June 24th before the ride. We strongly encourage riders to use the evening checkin or risk a delayed start.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
Bikes must have the following safety equipment as a minimum:

  • A fully functioning headlight, white and clearly visible from a distance of 150 yards to oncoming traffic on the bike at all times.
  • A taillight attached to the bicycle. Blinking taillights are permitted, but note that these may bother other riders. This must be on the bike at all times.
  • Riders must have a backup for both front and rear lights.
  • A reflective vest or sash and reflective ankle bands.
  • Helmets are required on all SIR events.

Lights must be mounted on the bike at all times. Lights must be operated at night on each bike in a group. Reflective vest and leg bands are required for night riding or during periods of poor visibility.

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT:

Hand held flashlights or helmet mounted lights are recommended for repairs made in the dark. Spare batteries and lights are recommended. A spare tire and several spare tubes, and sufficient tools to effect minor repairs are also recommended.

While not required, fenders (1/4 coverage front wheel and 1/2 coverage rear wheel) are recommended. June can be a rainy time in Western Washington, and much of this event travels through the Cascade Mountains, a region that can create its own weather.

Riding gear for inclement weather, bike tools, spare tubes, and sufficient food and water for yourself between controls is strongly recommended. Much of the route of the Cascade 1200 is very remote and devoid of commercial services.
