2005 was the inaugural year of the Cascade 1200, a ride sure to become a standard on the North American Randonneuring calendar. The Cascade 1200 will give you an opportunity to experience much of the beauty of Washington State, from the Columbia Gorge in the south to the North Cascades, near the Canadian border. You'll get to ride through the lush forests of Western Washington, and the high desert of the Mid Columbia Plateau. See Map here. This ride will provide most of the climbing in long steady climbs over mountain passes...less hill climbing and more mountain climbing. See Route Profile here. The Cascade 1200 will feature a group-oriented style of 1200 km riding. We will share common overnight stops each night and start more or less together each morning. Accommodations at the overnight stops and drop bag transport among those stops will be provided as part of the entry fee. This riding style will encourage a collegial 1200 km experience and will allow riders of different speeds to enjoy each other's company for more of the ride than might otherwise occur. The daily stages will take advantage of the long northern equinoctial days to provide lots of daylight riding. This 1200K brevet will start in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains northeast of Seattle and head south, along the front range of the Cascades, to the foot hills of Mount Rainier. Mt. Rainier Riders will then continue south and skirt Mt. St. Helens, then up and over Elk Pass before dropping into the Columbia Gorge to stop at Carson, Washington for the first night. Mt. St Helens From Carson, riders will travel east, up the gorge, climb out of the Columbia Breaks to Goldendale before dropping into the Yakima River valley, in Eastern Washington. Columbia Gorge Riders will turn east in Toppenish to cross the Rattlesnake Hills and then drop into the Columbia basin for the second night. From here riders will travel through time as they encounter the prehistoric archaeology of Moses Coulee, and the mid-Columbia plateau. Riders will then head west to once again cross the Columbia and head north to Loop Loop pass before spending the last night in the scenic Methow river valley at the foot of the North Cascades. North Cascades The last day will take the riders over Washington and Rainy Passes in the North Cascades, along the Skagit and Sauk rivers and home to the finish. Details on the ride and registration will be updated here regularly. Please check back often. |
